Die Reihe „Hope’s Music“ hat den Festspielen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern einen neuen Akzent gegeben und wird von ihrem Ideen- und Namensgeber Daniel Hope immer weiter ausgebaut.
Der Geiger Daniel Hope ist Künstlerischer Direktor der Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und will mit diesem Schwerpunkt den musikalischen Austausch zwischen Amerika und Mecklenburg-Vorpommern fördern. In diesem Rahmen fanden auch im Sommer 2011 wieder mehrere „Brückenschlag-Konzerte“ statt, in denen Musikerinnen und Musiker aus den führenden amerikanischen Kultur-Institutionen Lincoln Center und Carnegie Hall zusammen mit Preisträgern der Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern aufgetreten sind.
Das „Brückenschlag-Konzert“ am 25. August 2011 in der Schönberger Kirche nun war gleichzeitig auch Bestandteil des zeitgleich stattfindenden Festivals „Schönberger Musiksommer“.

A burst of stamping, earthy energy from Bartok's Dance Suite sets this concert in motion, before the UK Premiere of a double concerto by Gyorgy Kurtag for violin and viola. The second half continues the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Sibelius Cycle with the 'cold clear water' of the Sixth Symphony and the stark loneliness of the Seventh.

Bartok's Dance Suite was written in 1923 to a commission to mark the 50th anniversary of the merging of the two cities of Buda and Pest into Hungary's capital. It was amongst the first of Bartok's popular successes, drawing on folk-music styles as diverse as Hungarian, Romanian and even Arabic. Kurtag's award-winning double concerto '.concertante.' has waited over eight years for its UK Premiere and is performed tonight by the work's dedicatees, the violinist Hiromi Kikuchi and violist Ken Hakii, along with a huge orchestra including a cimbalom and steel drum. The Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste brings his Nordic expertise to this second instalment in the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Sibelius Symphony Cycle in the second half. Sibelius's Sixth Symphony was premiered in the same year as Bartok's Dance Suite - 1923 - and was supposedly described by the composer (who was no stranger to a drink) as pure spring water rather than a cocktail. The concert finishes with Sibelius's final completed symphony, his Seventh - a revolutionary work conceived in one continuous movement , and one of the last works he wrote, although he lived on another 33 years after writing it.

Las imágenes fueron concebidas por Claude Debussy como piezas para piano a cuatro manos o para dos pianos.
Originariamente el compositor las consideró piezas separadas. Hay escasa interrelación literal entre ellas y, de hecho, a menudo se las interpreta por separado.
Iberia -en sí misma una composición de tres movimientos- frecuentemente se escucha sola, en tanto que Gigas y Rondas de Primavera se ejecutan con menor frecuencia. El orden que Debussy estableció para su ejecución no es el orden de la composición.

La composición de la pieza orquestal Imágenes ocupó a Claude Debussy desde 1906 hasta 1912. Iberia quedó concluida el 25 de diciembre de 1908 y se estrenó el 20 de febrero de 1910 en los Concerts Colonne, en París, bajo la batuta de Gabriel Piemé. Rondas de Primavera quedó concluida el 10 de mayo de 1909 y se estrenó el 2 de marzo de 1910 en los Concerts Durand, en París, bajo la dirección del compositor. Gigas fue terminada, en una versión para dos pianos, el 4 de enero de 1909, pero la versión orquestal estuvo terminada en 1912, con la ayuda de André Caplet, que realizó gran parte de la orquestación debido a la mala salud del compositor. Caplet dirigió el estreno en los Concerts Colonne, en París, el 26 de enero de 1913.

When the New York Metropolitan Opera opened in 1883 the very first opera to be staged was Gounod's Faust and it has been enormously popular there ever since. It tells the famous story of Dr Faust and how he sells his soul to the devil, Mephistopheles, in order to regain his youth. It's the opera that features in the plot of 'Phantom of the Opera' and it's music includes some very famous numbers, including the 'Jewel Song' and the Soldiers Chorus. Initially something of a failure, Gounod's Faust has been providing a great night out at the opera (and a great challenge to star singers) ever since its first revival in 1863 and will no doubt do so for many years to come.

Martyn Brabbins conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in youthful masterpieces by Mozart and Zemlinsky, plus Brahms' popular Variations on a theme by Haydn.

Mozart's third Violin Concerto marked a significant step forward for the young composer, still only 19. Written in Salzburg, it's an astonishing achievement of refined elegance. It's played by the young soloist Alexandra Soumm, one of the rising stars of Radio 3's New Generation Artist Scheme.

Zemlinsky was still a student when he wrote his first symphony. Completed in 1893 as he was finishing his studies at the Vienna Conservatoire, he conducted the premiere himself at the end of term concert. It immediately established the young composer as a master of orchestral colour with an assured sense of symphonic development - almost all of the musical material germinates from the seed of the first five notes.

Brahms was in the audience for that concert, and he immediately became a great champion of Zemlinsky's music. Twenty years earlier, his own Variations on the St. Anthony Chorale had a similar mastery, an impressive development of a simple theme into a joyous and inventive symphonic outburst. For Brahms it proved a vital stepping stone to the successful creation of his first symphony.

Martyn Brabbins returns to the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for the first time since their storming Proms success with Havergal Brian's Gothic Symphony in the summer.

Paul Abraham Dukas (1 October 1865 -- 17 May 1935) was a French composer, critic, scholar and teacher. A studious man, of retiring personality, he was intensely self-critical, and he abandoned and destroyed many of his compositions. His best known work is the orchestral piece, L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice), the fame of which has eclipsed that of his other surviving works. Among these are an opera Ariane et Barbe-bleue (Ariadne and Bluebeard), a symphony, two substantial works for solo piano, and a ballet, La Péri.

The Symphony in C major was composed in 1895--96, when Dukas was in his early 30s. It is dedicated to Paul Vidal, and had its first performance in January 1896, under the direction of the dedicatee. In a study of Dukas published towards the end of the composer's life, Irving Schwerké wrote, "The work ... is an opulent expression of modernism in classical form. Its ideational luxuriance, nobility of utterance and architectural solidity mark it as one of the most conspicuous achievements of contemporaneous writing, and magnificently refute the generally prevalent notion that no French composer has ever produced a great symphony." Like Franck's only symphony, Dukas's is in three movements rather than the conventional four. Schwerké wrote of it:

"Expressed in an individual and spontaneous idiom, the Symphony in C gives free play to the author's creative spirit and to his fund of exalted emotion. The high-spirited, impetuous first movement, Allegro non troppo vivace is intensely rhythmic. Its logical structure, strong thematic material, polyphonic richness and virile instrumentation combine to create an exhilarating effect of life and pageant color. The second movement, Andante, in sharp contrast to the first, reveals the perfect finish of the composer's style and the ineffable charm of his melody. The robust last movement, Allegro spiritoso, so verdant in instrumentation, brings the symphony to a vigorous close."
